McFarlane's Simpsons Island of Dr. Hibbert

At the end of the World of Springfield line, there was one last Tree House of Horror in the works, that never made it into plastic. For whatever reason, Fox really wanted the Manimals and the collectors really wanted a mixed Halloween figure set which you can see here. It is too bad we never got to see either set, but now with the McFarlane line of Simpsons figures, we get to see The Island of Dr. Hibber set and some very cool Manimals.

Packaging ***

The packaging for this looks beautiful and does and amazing job of showing off the figures in the box. The figures are posed similar to how they are in the set and this really looks nice in box for those non-openers out there. The sides have some wonderful shots of the figures and the back has some great shots from the epsiode, a Didja Know section, and episode synopsis. If it was going on looks alone this would be **** packaging. There are some issues though with the way everything is packed inside. Dr. Hibbert isn't held in place too well and can slide out of his packaging and roll around. Worse than that though is the spider web is very difficult to remove without breaking and I broke the connections on one of the trees. If you have something that is as fragile as the web, twist ties just don't cut it.

Articulation * 1/2

There is some articulation there, but that isn't what McFarlane is usually all about. There are a few cut necks and shoulders, but not too much else. Homer does have a bobble head feature which is kind of cool.

Accessories ***

While the set only has a few accessories, the bases themselves are really wonderful. Comic Book guy has a staff, which comes in two pieces to allow it to slide into his hand. It also comes with the fire.

Sculpting ****

The sculpting on this set is top notch and the best sculpts of any of McFarlane's Simpsons sets. The characters really look amazing. The only minor issue I have is that they put Bart at an odd angle.

Paint *** 1/2

While not perfect, the paint on these figures is really nice looking. The lines black lines are nice a crisp. There is very little slop. The fire has a cool translucent paint job on it.

Overall *** 1/2

This is a really great looking set and easily my favorite Simpsons release from McFarlane. The sculpt is just amazing, the paint is great, they did a nice selection of figures. This set really is top notch. The only downside is that the web is kind of fragile. It is too bad that they line ended, because it would have been great to get the other half of the set.
